January is often a time for setting health goals, with weight loss topping many New Year’s resolutions. As people explore the best path forward, they may encounter a variety of solutions, from lifestyle changes to medications to surgery. While all options aim to support weight management, some may be more effective or appropriate depending on individual needs.
Chances are you’ve heard about weight loss medications like Wegovy and Zepbound, or diabetic medications like Ozempic and Mountaro, which are increasingly being used for weight management. Due to high demand and cost, there has been a surge in compounded versions of GLP-1 drugs as lower-cost alternatives. However, it’s important to note that these compounded drugs have not received FDA approval, raising questions about their safety and effectiveness.
“In January, people are often looking for the magic pill for permanent weight loss,” said Keneth Hall, MD, FACS, FASMBS, a weight loss specialist at Rome Health. “It’s important for everyone to weigh the potential benefits and risks of each option. Patients should discuss their choices with their healthcare provider to determine the best approach for long-lasting results.”

Weight loss is a deeply personal journey, and no single solution fits everyone. Medications like GLP-1 drugs can be effective for some, but sustainable weight loss often requires a holistic approach. This might include dietary changes, increased physical activity, and behavioral support.
Dr. Hall emphasizes the importance of tailoring strategies to each individual’s unique needs. “Your health journey is your own,” he said. “Take the time to explore your options and make an informed decision that aligns with your goals and overall well-being.”
Dr. Hall specializes in medical and surgical weight loss solutions, including robotic-assisted weight loss surgery. Some patients start with medications, but later choose a surgical approach due to side effects or the cost of the daily or weekly shots due to the need for continuous treatment. According to studies, patients regain up to 66% of the weight lost within one year of stopping weight loss medications, compared to 7% weight regain eight to 10 years after surgery.
Rome Health is nationally recognized as a Blue Distinction® Center for Bariatric Surgery and is accredited by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP®) for excellence in care.
